The Pearl District
The Pearl District makes up a chunk of the NW quadrant of Portland. Anecdotally, I remember it being one of the first areas of town that had more traditional luxury apartments and townhouses, urban parks, and swanky storefronts. Aforementioned parks, old warehouses-turned-shops, cute bars, and the inimitable Powell’s Book Store makes this a great area to cruise. Let’s not forget that Oregon special: no sales tax!
Powell’s Book Store (the largest independent book store in the country - an entire square city block!)
Anthropologie, Sur La Table, Keen’s, REI, Lululemon, Madewell - the list goes on and on
Jamison Square
21st/23rd Ave. (lots of restaurants and small, unique boutiques)
Southwest Portland/Downtown
Portland’s more traditional downtown area is in the SW quadrant on the city. Here is where you’ll find the skyscrapers (they’re tall for Portland OKAY), a row of nice hotels with great bars, and the Nordstrom where I used to try - and fail - to upsell grown women a camisole with whatever $100 cardigan they had picked out. You’ll also find a beautiful walking and bike path just next to the Willamette River that will give you views of a number of the bridges connecting the east and west sides.
